ISLAND IN CHAINS (article first published : 2000-02-17)

Indres Naidoo was released from Robben Island in 1973. Once outside South Africa, he told his experiences to then human rights activist now judge Albie Sachs who had also been imprisoned and banned in South Africa. Together they grouped the themes into chapters and produced Island in Chains.

The book was first published in 1982 by Penguin UK and was instantly banned in South Africa. Some 17 years later, Penguin South Africa have republished the book with a new foreword by Mac Maharaj. There is also a new introduction and epilogue as well as minor editorial changes.

I hope I have documented the horrors of the apartheid regime in the hope that it will help to heal the wounds of those of our people who sacrificed and suffered so much for freedom. We will march together to realise the African Renaissance, says Indres Naidoo in the introduction to the new edition.
