ABUNDANT HERDS (article first published : 2003-11-17)

For years, Marguerite Poland and David Hammond-Tooke have been examining the significance of the Nguni cattle to the Zulu people now and in the past.

Their book Abundant Herds, is a most important record of an area of indigenous knowledge which is threatened by the changes in South African society and celebrates both the richness of the Zulu language and the creative imagination of the Zulu people. Greatly enhancing the beauty of the book itself are Leigh Voigt's splendid illustrations, both sympathetic and analytical.

The markings and colourings of the Nguni cattle also inspired Marguerite’s best-selling most recent novel Recessional for Grace.
