VOICES AFRICA (article first published : 2003-11-9)

The Durban Arts Association and Indlela Community Trust present Voices Africa, a monthly poetry recital programme. The programme will take place every second Friday of the month. The first performance that was due to take place in October will take place on Friday November 14 at 17h30 in the Playhouse Loft Theatre.

The aim of the programme is to give a platform for new and as-yet unestablished poets in Kwa Zulu Natal in order for them to gain insight into the poets and poetry of South Africa. Voices Africa will also work alongside with the already established poetry programmes such as Poetry Africa and popular institutions.

An established guest poet will be invited to each session to analyse and evaluate each poet as a further developmental benefit. Poets will be judged on various categories after each session. Five or more poets judged best in each session will qualify to enter the final poetry competition. There will be workshops where these poets will be trained before the final competition.

A compilation book entitled Voices Africa will be produced at the end of the project and the work of each poet taking part in the finals will be published in the book.

All poets wishing to participate in the programme are requested to attend this month’s poetry session, where they can register for other forthcoming performances as well.

The Durban Arts Association and Indlela Community Trust acknowledge the support of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Entrance is free of charge. For more information call Durban Arts Association on 031 312 1236 or Smangele on 083 511 1407.
