STONE TOWN STYLES (article first published : 2003-11-3)

Antje Rickens-Körner was born in Germany, raised in the UK, Lebanon and Egypt and now resides in Cape Town. She obtained a Masters degree (cum laude) in interior architecture from the University of Wales and is currently lecturing in the history of Interior design in Cape Town.

She has recently written a book titled Stone Town Styles – of East Coast Africa with photographs taken by Stan Engelbrecht. whose first book is entitled The Caution Horses.

In 1998 Antje visited the old capital of Zanzibar called Stone Town. Her first question on arrival was: Why is this capital called "Stone Town”? She proceeded to continue her research, many aspects of which have been included in this book. The subject area focuses on the 12th to 20th century interior architecture of stone towns in the East African coastal region. This includes literary and field research, geographic and historic aspects of climate, trade and socio-cultural influences. There is a spatial and material analysis of house types and decorative elements. Conservation and contemporary aspects of traditional East Coast interior architecture are also considered.

In October 2002 Antje and Stan set off to photograph the images contained in this book. The result is a 180 page full colour book, printed on 170g magno matt satin with drawn on soft cover. The format is 280 X 280mm.

Published in September 2003 by Bell-Roberts Publishing,Stone Town Styles – of East Coast Africa) is available at leading bookstores nationwide. Reference ISBN 0620312084 and the retail price R395.
