JUST THE TICKET (article first published : 2003-10-18)

Radio Today presents a radio adaptation of Just the Ticket by Percy Tucker on his 50+ years in South African theatre on Sundays at 18h00 and Thursdays at 11h30 on 1485am.

The highlights of this week’s episode (October 19) include:

The visit to South Africa of the Athens Drama Company, who played to packed audiences all over SA who didn't understand Greek. Also featured is the inside story of how the rights to the musical Show Boat were obtained and all about Anthony Farmer's lavish production for JODS at the Civic Theatre and the Alhambra in Cape Town.

Other items are the banning of Taubie Kushlick's production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; My Fair Lady opening in South Africa with Diane Todd; why Hollywood singing star Connie Frances was arrested in Johannesburg with Michael McGovern describing the nightmare of her opening performance at Ellis Park.

Joan Brickhill tells her story of the chaos when she and her husband Louis Burke moved from Durban to Johannesburg to stage Oklahoma at the Alexander Theatre. During the run of the show Muriel Alexander celebrated her 80th birthday in a Surrey with a Fringe on the Top.

Joy Adamson the author of Born Free comes to Johannesburg to lecture on Elsa, her beloved lion and is a complete disaster. The Performing Arts Councils commence with major productions of Opera, Ballet and Drama, South Africa is treated to the famous ballet partnership of Phyllis Spira and Gary Byrne as well as visits by Cliff Richard and Helen Shapiro.
