EX-BUDDHIST NUN FOR LIVE POETS (article first published : 2003-10-18)

Thanissara, aka Mary Peacock, originally from London, has spent the last 25 years contemplating the Jewelled Path of Awakening. This has carried her through living in India, meditation centres in Burma and the UK and 12 years as a Buddhist nun in the Forest Tradition of North East Thailand.

For the last eight years she has lived in South Africa with her husband Kittisaro at a small hermitage in the Drakensberg. They teach Buddhist philosophy and meditation and are guiding teachers at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo. They also help to guide and support outreach programmes promoting education and health to the rural people of the Ufafa region.

Thanissara’s recent book of poetry Garden of the Midnight Rosary traces the inner journey of the mystic. She will present excerpts together with music during the next meeting of the Live Poets’ Society on October 8 at 17h30 in Adams Books Coffee Shop, Musgrave Centre, Durban.

Copies of the collection will be offered for dana – free will offering (give what you wish) – with the proceeds going towards the outreach programmes.

In keeping with the spirit of the book and its author’s beliefs, the evening’s theme is Enlightenment. Those with poems which could be connected to this subject are invited to present them. During the Poet Pourri session, poets are welcome to air work on any topic at all.

Entrance is free and all are welcome, whether you write poetry or not. More details from Brett on 082 516 0517, 031 266 4762 (a/h) or e-mail thirdeye@3i.co.za
