ONLY MEN AND BOYS (article first published : 2003-08-20)

The links between gender, power and sexuality are critical if the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic is to be won. The KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council believes that it is essential that the attitudes of both men and women be explored in order to find new ways in which men and women can contribute towards the curbing of the epidemic. As part of a men, gender and HIV/AIDS programme, the KwaZulu Natal Christian Council has initiated an essay writing competition.

The competition is open to men and boys in KwaZulu Natal, who believe that they can contribute towards positive change in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Submissions should respond to the question “How can I as a man contribute positively towards reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS?”

Submissions should attempt to address the following questions: what does it mean to be a man; what is HIV/AIDS and how is it spread; how does gender-based violence, for example, sexual abuse, rape, etc contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS, what are the barriers/obstacles that makes it difficult for men to change behaviour in order to spread of HIV/AIDS and how can men overcome these barriers/obstacles?

There are three categories for entries: high school grade 8-12; men attending tertiary institutions and adult men. Submissions of between 1000-3000 words are invited in English, isiZulu and Afrikaans in various writing forms for example personal narratives; reflections; essays; short stories, and any other way you choose to express your thoughts. Unfortunately no poetry submissions will be accepted.

There are three prizes per category: 1st prize: R1000; 2nd prize: R500; 3rd prize: R250. Entries should be sent to Essay-Writing Competition 2003; Postnet Suite 27; Private Bag X578; Eshowe, 3815 or email: kzrcc@telkomsa.net

Entries should be submitted no later than August 29. Prizes will be awarded at a special ceremony, as part of a seminar which will be held on September 19. For further information about the competition call 035 474 1058.
