THE COIN MERCHANTS (article first published : 2003-08-15)

The newsmaker of the year, the much-maligned Rand; its depreciation; its “volatility” and a riveting blend of romance, betrayal and adventure are the key ingredients of a new work by critically acclaimed author, Ashutosh Shrivastava. Like his debut novel, Not Even A Single Tremble, this refreshing new work titled The Coin Merchants, is a work of credible fiction that is both thought-provoking and entertaining.

It is dedicated to the people of South Africa who have suffered because of the depreciation of the Rand.

The scenario is that the South African currency loses 40% of its value against the world’s major currencies within a period of just three months! The magnitude and complexity of the currency trade blind people. They believe the rand’s devaluation to be an unfortunate outcome of market forces. However, the real reason behind the inflated food prices and economic chaos does not escape Nadia, young MD of a large firm.

Up against the big boys, she turns to the only person who can help her: the President of the country. But the currency manipulators have billions at stake and can afford no mistake. They recruit Rad, a shrewd, merciless powerbroker with a zero failure rate, but will he be able to stop Nadia? Will Nadia save the rand? Will the coin merchants lose their billions?’

Ashutosh Shrivastava was born in 1965 in Lucknow, India. With a degree in English Literature and an honors degree in Economics, he embarked on an exciting corporate career spanning fifteen years in several countries and continents.

Today, he heads his own companies involved in international trade and publishing. His debut novel, Not Even a Single Tremble depicting corporate and social life in Nigeria, was published in 2001 to critical acclaim. He is married to Fawzia and has made Durban his home.
