CAINE PRIZE FOR AFRICAN WRITING (article first published : 2003-07-20)

On Jully 11, the Royal Over-Seas League hosted a literary evening in connection with The Caine Prize for African Writing 2003, Africa's premiere award for literature. The prize, awarded annually for African creative writing, is named after the late Sir Michael Caine, former Chairman of Booker plc and Chairman of the Booker Prize management committee for nearly 25 years.

Speakers included the five authors short-listed for the prize this year: Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor (Kenya); Ken Barris (South Africa); Emmanuel Dongala (Congo); Rachelle Greeff (South Africa) and George Makana Clark (Zimbabwe).

The Caine Prize is unique in bringing together authors from different parts of the African continent and this will be the first time that they will have met. The authors will stay for a week at the Royal Over-Seas League, prior to the announcement at the Bodleian Library, Oxford on July 14.

Nobel Prize winners for Literature, Wole Soyinka, Nadine Gordimer and Naguib Mahfouz, are Patrons of The Caine Prize. Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne is President of the Council and Jonathan Taylor is its Chairman. Last year's Prize was awarded to Kenyan writer and journalist, Binyavanga Wainaina for Discovering Home from G21 Net (2001). The short listed stories from 2001 have been published in a collection entitled Timbuktu, Timbuktu and will be available for sale after the event.
