SLAM POETRY CONTEST (article first published : 2003-04-15)

The fifth in a popular series of poetry contests, dubbed SLAMM, will take place at the BAT Centre on April 19.

SLAM

The first SLAM contest set the tone, and the event has grown in popularity to the point where poets are queuing up for the chance to showcase their work. An overall winner is nominated at each event and the 12 monthly champions will compete against one another in the Grand Final in October this year.

The winner of last month's event was schoolgirl prodigy Beryl Thusi who will be reading new works at this month's event. The winner of Saturday's contest will receive an artwork from Mozambican artist Ezequiel Mabote who is currently on a residency programme in Chicago.

The SLAM organisers invite members of the public and participating poets, to join them in the Functions Room at the BAT Centre, 45 Maritime Place, Small Craft Harbour, at 14h30 on April 19. It promises to be an entertaining, thought-provoking celebration of our combined oral tradition.

Admission is R10 at the door. Poets wishing to take part in the contest are asked to reserve their slot as soon as possible, by calling Coolfire on 083 304 8312 or the SPOT Chairman on 082 979 4204. Bookings will be made on a first-come-first-served basis.
