ARCHANGELS (article first published : 2003-04-2)

Durban-born Guy Willoughby, a former senior lecturer in English and Media studies at Pretoria University has written and performed radio drama, stage plays, satirical revues and comic cabarets, including Major Schisstirrer, Peace in our Time, Ons is nie van Kalbaskraal nie, Armed Responz and Spectacles.

His experimental musical, African Star! - The Will Schreiner Story, was an acclaimed headline event at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2000. A well-known arts broadcaster and lecturer, he is currently Arts Writer in the Western Cape for the Mail & Guardian and Africa Correspondent for the New York-based Opera News.

Guy Willoughby is the author of Art and Christhood : the aesthetics of Oscar Wilde (1993, Assoc University Presses of America) based on his Ph D Thesis from the University of Cape Town.

His current theatre projects include the libretto of a new indigenous opera, Valley Song (based on Athol Fugard's play) to be produced by the Spier Arts Festival in 2003-04 and his stage play Stander Lives (commissioned by the National Arts Council).

Brevitas Publishers in Howick (KZN) have published Guy Willoughby's first novel .

Archangels, described by Charlotte Bauer of the Sunday Times as a self-described comedy of bad manners which hilariously, unflinchingly describes one man's journey to a rocky little island called midlife crisis. The central character, Howard Sheerness, is a weak and self-indulgent man but one who possesses sufficient intelligence and bourgeois brio to have passed an adult lifetime circling success and making a reasonable facsimile of marriage, though he's far too self-involved to countenance having children.

Now his wife Sandra has left him for a bona fide grown-up with a kick-ass bank balance and committed sperm. In short , Howard Sheerness is ready to proceed without caution, to throw in the His and Hers towels and re-launch himself as a single gay man-about-(Cape)town.
