TITLES FROM UNIVERSITY PRESS (article first published : 2000-01-10)

The University of Natal Press in Pietermaritzburg has produced a wide variety of titles, ranging from Rock Paintings of the Natal Drakensberg by J D Lewis-Williams and T A Dowson of the Rock Art Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand to South African Writing in Transition edited by Duncan Brown and Bruno van Dyk.

Other titles include Gandhi and South Africa – Principles and Politics edited by Judith M Brown and Martin Prozesky, The Drum Decade – Stories from the 1950’s edited by Michael Chapman, The Smaller Mammals of KwaZulu-Natal by Peter Taylor and Zulu Medicinal Plants compiled by Anne Hutchings with Alan Haxton Scott, Gillian Lewis and Anthony Cunningham. Adulphe Delegorgue has produced two volumes titled Travels in Southern Africa.

Singing Away the Hunger by Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya is a compelling and unique autobiography dealing with her life in Lesotho. Another publication focusing on Lesotho is Basali! edited by K Limakatso Kendall which comprises stories by and about women in this rugged mountain kingdom.

African Life in 20th Century Durban is discussed in The People’s City edited by Paul Maylam and Iain Edwards; Painting the Map Red by Carman Miller focuses on Canada and the South African War (1899 to 1902); Bringing Forth Light by J W Colenso comprises five tracts on Bishop Colenso’s Zulu mission, and Jeff Guy writes about the civil war in Zululand (1879-1884) in The Destruction of the Zulu Kingdom.
