RENAISSANCE WRITER FOR LIVE POETS (article first published : 2003-03-8)

After more than a full house at the first meeting this year of The Live Poets' Society, it's suggested that latecomers bring their own cushions or folding chairs to the next meeting scheduled for 17h30 on March 13 at Adams Books Coffee Shop in Musgrave Centre.

The guest poet is Charl Fregona who first came to the fore when her work Ebbing Tides appeared in an American collection and was exhibited at the NSA Gallery together with paintings inspired by her evocative insights.

Then her collection Moments With Radiance caused a stir when it was published a few years ago. She has since edited and contributed to the anthology Collaborations - A Book of South African Art and Poetry which also appeared at the NSA.

Something of a Renaissance writer, Charl's stories have been featured in four volumes of the South African Short Stories series, including her highly acclaimed Acacia Thorn. Her novel The Waiting Place also received excellent reviews and was nominated for the Sunday Times Prize last year.

As it is Human Rights Day this month, the evening's theme is Humanity. Poets will have an opportunity during the evening to present their work which could be linked to this ambiguous subject. During the Poet Pourri session they will also have the chance to air their work on any topic they wish.

Entrance is free and all are welcome. Please note that because of the cricket, this month's meeting takes place on the second Thursday - not Wednesday as usual. For more details contact Brett on 031 266 4762 or 082 516 0517 or preferably e-mail thirdeye@3i.co.za
