HEAVY CEREBRAL METAL (article first published : 2003-02-19)

“It's always a bit awkward to share one's achievements ( as certain small- minded beings can be quite disparaging and parochial ),” writes Durban author Deena Padayachee, “but as Kessie Govender (the late actor, writer and director) had said, this kind of information can but inspire our fellow citizens and motivate them to read and to write, given where so many of us are coming from. There are still far too few books or articles written by melanin advantaged people in our country.

Deena’s short story Heavy Cerebral Metal has just been published in a short story collection edited by Professor Stephen Gray. It contains work by people like Es'kia Mphahlele, Mongane Serote, Sipho Sepampla and Nadine Gordimer but Deena appears to be the only Durban based writer in the collection.

The tale was first published by Short Story International of New York and then broadcast by the SABC in their short story slot.
