FAT-BURNER FOODS (article first published : 2003-01-5)

Dr Caroline M Shreeve has a considerable track record both medically and as a health writer and journalist in the UK. Until recently, she practised in the Australian outback.

She has written a book titled Fat-Burner Foods, a soft-covered psychedelic book which does an excellent job of turning a medical weight loss reference book into an exciting adventure.

The book is meant to be used as a general reference and recipe book to aid weight loss. Dr Shreeve has gone to great lengths to explain and set out the facts about fat, understanding overweight and the dangers of surplus fat.

The solution being fat-burner foods. The Fat-Burning Food Plan had its origin in Western Australia where it was used on patients to lose weight quickly and safely pending heart surgery.

First of all, it involves the rapid fat loss plan for two weeks. Then follows three alternative stabiliser plans also over 14 days. These are the Luxury; Vegetarian and Entertaining. These encourage the development of healthier eating habits.

There are many delicious and beautifully illustrated recipes to choose from. This is not just a glossy cookbook. The emphasis is mainly on the medical facts and the eating plan with enough words of encouragement to psyche up the individual to embark on this worthwhile step to weight loss and health improvement.

Designer Bill Mason, food stylist Oona van den Berg and photographer Dave Jordan have used their combined talents well and it is an easy to read and well laid-out book.

Just one comment having paged through the book several times in order to write this review, the glue on the spine has come away. Not good for a book of this price that is bound to be referred to time and time again.
