CATHERINE CLARK WINS KTV WRITE STUFF (article first published : 2002-11-10)

KTV Write Stuff was launched ten years ago, in an effort to make children aware of the importance of reading and to develop a love of books, as part of their essential development.

It was the first Pan African initiative created to encourage children to read and expand their own creative abilities, by writing a storybook for children of their own age.

This year the competition was opened to two age groups- 7-9 and 10-13 years old. The challenge to each entrant was to venture into the world of fantasy and write and illustrate their own story using their imagination and creativeness. There was an overwhelming response to the competition with 3,250 entries received, more than doubling the entries from last year.

Another first for the competition was that it sponsored by Crayola. Each child who received a competition entry form received a complimentary box of Crayola crayons. The association worked extremely well if the high quality of illustrations received was anything to go by.

Winner in the 7-9 category for a prize of R10,000 was Catherine Clark for The Sweet Bears. A Durban Girls College pupil, Catherine also wins a computer for her school to the value of R8000.
