ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY (article first published : 2002-10-26)

SA's Environmental History: Cases and Comparisons is a pioneering study of the impact of humans on the environment in the history of Southern Africa and the role that the environment has played in shaping the history of human development in the subcontinent.

Edited by Stephen Dovers of the University of Sydney with Ruth Edgecombe and Bill Guest of the University of Natal Pietermaritzburg, the book consists of two parts.

Firstly, there is a series of local and particular studies such as the invasion of the prickly pear in the Eastern Cape, a century of windmills, barbed wire and changing farm practice in the Karoo, and an environmental history of St. Lucia.

The second part is a series of regional and continental comparisons e.g. SA and South America, SA and South Asia, SA and Africa, and SA and Australia. The book is illustrated with photographs and maps and among its 15 contributors is distinguished historian William Beinart.

Stephen Dovers is a distinguished environmental historian based at the University of Sydney. Until her recent death, Ruth Edgecombe was a professor of history at the University of Natal Pietermaritzburg. Bill Guest recently retired as professor of history from the same institution.
