CRESSWELL FOR LIVE POETS (article first published : 2002-08-3)

The Live Poets' Society has had exclusively male guest presenters since the group moved its meetings last March to Adams Books Coffee Shop in Musgrave Centre. With Women's Day falling in August, the organisers feel it would be very remiss of them not to have a woman presenter this month.

The guest poet for their August meeting is Evelyn Cresswell whose collection entitled Touched and Touching was recently produced as a CD with accompanying book. The programme was originally presented on stage by the Kwasuka Theatre Company. It was such a success that they subsequently recorded the CD which, together with the book, has practically sold out - although a few copies have been held back for this meeting.

During her career as an academic and an activist, Evelyn Cresswell worked for Dr Beyers Naudé as the Organising Secretary of the Christian Institute which challenged the theological basis of Apartheid. It's thus no surprise that many of her poems are strongly political - with such titles as Soweto 1976, Steve Biko Is Dead and Nat Deconstruction. Latterly her work has softened to more lyrical subjects such as Wild Olive, The Red Rose and Umlilo. She was a finalist for the Sanlam Literary Award.

Taking a cue from the title of the collection, the evening's theme is Senses. Poets are invited to present any of their work which could be linked to this wide-ranging topic. In the Poet Pourri section of the meeting they will also have the opportunity to air their work on any subject they wish.

The meeting is at 17h30 on August 14. There is no charge and all are welcome. More details from Brett on 031 266-4762.
