NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Shakespeare Society of Southern Africa reports that at their first Executive Meeting this year, Professor Laurence Wright has been appointed Honorary Life President of the Shakespeare Society of Southern Africa, succeeding the late Professor Guy Butler. Professor Elizabeth Sneddon has been awarded honorary life membership of the Society in recognition of her services to South African theatre. The new National President is Hildé Slinger, who is also convenor of the triennial congress of the Society, to be held in Grahamstown in 2003. Hildé Slinger retired 11 years ago as the principal of Holy Family College in Durban, a school founded in the 19th century and which has always catered for pupils of diverse cultures and denominations, from pre-school to matric. She moved into education after holding commercial, legal and managerial positions, via part-time study, which afforded her training in teaching and drama practice. She now holds two Licentiate Diplomas in Speech and Drama and a Higher Diploma in Education (English and Communication).
