KOBUS MOOLMAN (article first published : 2002-06-10)

Artist Kobus Moolman recently won the coveted Ingrid Jonker Prize for the best debut volume of poetry entitled Time Like Stone. Together with a R2,000 cash prize, Moolman received a memorial medal by sculptor Bill Davis. Time Like Stone was published by the University of Natal Press in June 2000.

The Ingrid Jonker Prize was instituted after the young poetess’s “second burial” in 1965 when her friends decided to honour her memory with a prize for young poets. Writers and friends contributed money, and a publisher donated all income from the books In Memoriam, Ingrid Jonker and Die Sestigers toward the award. The prize is awarded for debut work, for English and Afrikaans poetry.

An award-winning and well-published poet, both locally and abroad, Kobus Moolman has had several of his short stories broadcast on the BBC and the SABC. He lives in Pietermaritzburg where he is senior Education Officer at the Tatham Art Gallery. He worked on his anthology of poetry in the Karoo village of Nieu Bethesda and is one of five South African poets featured in a collection by Botsotso Publishers, entitled 5.

At present Moolman is a regular columnist for The Natal Witness, and editor of the annual KZN poetry journal, Fidelities.
