IRON LOVE (article first published : 1999-11-17)

Iron Love is the new novel by Marguerite Poland. Set in 1913 in a boys’ school in colonial South Africa, the story deals with Charlie Fraser. Not “even a remarkable boy”, Charlie is “just one of the good fellows in the house with a particular facility with a rugby ball”. “For every boy, the heart of the school is his own house, his house-master and his particular hero,” the cover notes read. ”And, for every new boy coming through the hallowed doors, there are two commandments. The first: Silence and Denial. The second: Not to fail at Footer. Validation lies in honouring these. At whatever cost.” Iron Love retails at Adams branches at R110.
