PRIZE FOR RONNIE (article first published : 1999-11-15)

Durban writer Ronnie Govender won the 1997 Commonwealth Writer’s Prize for his collection of short stories At The Edge – and other Cato Manor Stories. He adapted At The Edge for the stage and the highly successful and award-winning production featuring Pat Pillai has performed to much critical acclaim in South Africa as well as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Toronto.

Ronnie Govender, who also received an AA Vita Award for his lifelong contribution to theatre has also written 14 plays, including the blockbuster The Lahnee’s Pleasure. He is to be awarded on November 19 with the English Academy Medal for his important contribution to English through drama, education and literature. The award will recognise his social leadership role as well as the artistic excellence of his work.
