LAUNCH OF CRITICAL STUDIES (article first published : 2002-05-11)

The Graduate Programme of the Centre for Culture and Media Studies, The International Office of the University of Natal and Adams Campus Bookshop recently launched the publication Media, Democracy and Renewal In Southern Africa. It is edited by Keyan Tomaselli (Centre for Culture & Media Studies, University of Natal) and Hopeton Dunn (Carribean Institute for Media & Communication) published by International Academic Press, Denver, USA.

Media, Democracy is the latest of two new titles in the series, Critical Studies on African Media and Culture. The second title, also released May 2002 in the USA, is Media & Democracy in Zimbabwe 1931 - 2002 by James Zaffiro. This title will be available late July or early August in South Africa.

It is the first anthology to provide critical perspectives on media structures, ownership, new regulatory regimes, and the way both nations and local communities within them have engaged with globalisation via localized responses in Southern Africa. Studies discuss privatisation, black empowerment, liberalisation, traditional communication, Democracy and media freedom, the Kalahari San, identity, and new media.

The countries discussed are South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and with regards to diasporic issues in the Caribbean. This volume in the series, is a companion to the already published Media Development (2001/02 issue) which contains further studies of Media and globalisation in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
