NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. "Mamba is compulsive!" So maintains Artworks Publishing responsible for Mamba which houses "a collection of thoughts, ideas, fantasies, fears, images, memories, and other - pulled in from the remotest parts of Durban, and beyond." Comprising 90 single pages, printed and plastic-ring-bound, Mamba - marginal culture with a lethal byte was launched last month and is the collaborative effort of 35 people, among them well-known artists and writers. Why Mamba? "The snake is a strong symbol which everyone can attach meaning to, in some way. It's a Durban thing," says Andy who has scooped a couple of firsts for the inaugural Mambazine: an unpublished work by Linton Kwesi Johnson, new etchings by Breyten Breytenbach and photographer Val Adamson's interpretations of Fiona Kirkwood's installations at the NSA. To get Mamba, contact Artworks at 30 Steel Road, Morningside, Durban, 4001.
