WRITERS GRANTS (article first published : 2002-03-19)

Following the success of the "Search for New Plays", an NAC initiative to encourage the production of new work, and the widespread support for the national craft initiative, under the banner of the National Arts Council, we are now announcing our literature initiative, Writers Grants.

Since its inception in 1997, the NAC has had to consider numerous applications from individual writers for financial assistance. In the course of its activities the Literature Panel has recommended allocations to various writers, from unknown emerging practitioners to established practitioners, with allocations varying in degree related to the specific requests from applicants.

Implementation of this NAC literature initiative, Writers Grants, is geared towards the writers' community of South Africa, who will at least have a some financial assistance upon which they could begin and develop new creative works. The following "writers grants" will be instituted once the Literature Panel of the NAC has applied its collective discretion in evaluating the merits of each individual application.

Writers to be considered for the NAC literature initiative are applicants who have been actively involved in creative writing practice for at least five years prior to their application have a record of original work (including translations) published in recognised publications. Please note that this literature initiative is in addition to regular literature funding allocations.

A total of 10 grants at R40,000 is on offer with a total annual expenditure of R400,000 per annum over the next three years. Applications must be accompanied by at least one, preferably two, letters of recommendation from people with literary expertise.

Also required is a list of four titles stating type (eg fiction, novel, feature article) publisher and date as well as a project proposal or draft of the works to be produced within one year or less.

The closing date is April 30. To apply contact: Zinzi Ramatseba or André Le Roux at the National Arts Council, PO Box 500, Newtown, Johannesburg, 2113. Or phone 011 838-1383 (ext 244), fax 011 838-6363 or e-mail lucky@nac.org.za, www.nac.org.za
