ENGLISH OLYMPIAD (article first published : 2002-03-19)

This collaborative initiative between De Beers, The Grahamstown Foundation and The South African Council for English Education is celebrating 26 years of enriching candidates through the study of English. Some 4,540 candidates have enrolled to explore the theme of Conflict and Reconciliation in South Africa through a poetry anthology of some of South Africa’s greatest poets called The Land Will Heal. The issues raised by the poets will have been at the forefront of many candidates’ minds when they write the examination early in March.

For the first time, candidates who could not afford the entrance fee were given partial bursaries by De Beers to enter the English Olympiad. At least 45 candidates have taken up this generous opportunity to participate in this educationally enriching programme.

The Top 15 candidates are invited to attend the National Schools’ Festival in Grahamstown in July as guests of De Beers and they will spend a week attending a feast of theatre, workshops and lectures by many of South Africa’s leading arts’ personalities. At a special English Olympiad ceremony, the rank order of the Top 20 candidates will be announced, and prizes such as a literary tour, books and bursaries will be awarded.
