FIONA KHAN NEW BOOKS (article first published : 2002-03-17)

Internationally renowned and award-winning poet and author Fiona Khan has just launched three childrenís books. A specialist in the field of childrenís writing, the books The Magic Calabash, The Grasshopper Who Could Not Jump and Hi! Iím HIV Positive are all well written and illustrated by three students from the Nanda Soobben College for Art, Animation and Design.

The Magic Calabash tells the story of a young street child who befriends a street peddler. This peddler from the Warwick Avenue Triangle has a magic calabash that enchants the young man and teaches him a lesson in life. The book is illustrated by Carey Lee Farbach a first year student at CFAD. The Grasshopper Who Could Not Jumpis a whimsical tale of a young grasshopper who refuses to make the attempt to learn how to hop. He is reminded by a flighty beetle of all the misery he could face by not jumping and soon makes the attempt to learn, even though dubious at first. It is illustrated by Byron Love a third year student.

The third book is Hi! Iím HIV Positive. This is a story of Thandeka who is six years old and lives on a farm in Umzinto. She faces the challenge of being HIV positive, the attitudes of her friends at school towards her and her attitude at being positive. This book, a first in the series, touches on all the aspects of Aids. It was illustrated by Vidya Aman, a third year student at CFAD. The HIV/Aids book comes in a package with charts and teaching aids which can be used at schools.

All of the books are outcomes based, easy to read and understand with outstanding illustrations. Contact e-mail fionakhan@ion.co.za. Cell: 083 699 4667 or www.cfad.co.za
