UMSINSI LAUNCHES TWO BOOKS (article first published : 2001-12-19)

Umsinsi Press and Adams Booksellers this evening launched two first novels from Durban writers.

The title, Bracelet 12-005-35700, of Garth Kitching’s novel refers to a smooth glittering stainless steel bracelet with imprinted small red letters. Set in the year 2005 and a world where the HI virus is mutating and becoming more deadly, the South African government is determined to eradicate this killer disease. Like all teenagers, Frikkie Breedenkamp understands the dangers of HIV and AIDS but falls in love with Jolene – “his girl with a thousand smiles”.

His terrible circumstances cause him to enter the grounds of “the haunted house” and it is in this place shrouded in mystery that he finds healing. Described as a story of triumph over adversity and the power of relationships, Bracelet 12-005-35700 is a tale of hope, even when situations seem hopeless.

In Nichola Rhys’s Road To Nowhere, Geoff Foster is a teenager like thousands, approaching his final school exams and hoping to go to university. However, unlike many of them Geoff is paralysed down the left side of his body and his family is falling apart. This emotionally intense story tells of the boy's struggle to find his road and his direction in a life that seems destined to go nowhere.
