K-TV WRITE STUFF (article first published : 1999-09-19)

K-TV invites all of Africa’s aspirant young authors to use the “write” side of their brain and enter the seventh annual K-TV Write Stuff Competition. The competition, in association with Jacklin Enterprises, requires primary school children aged between six and 13 to write and illustrate an original story-book for children their own age in either English or Afrikaans. This can be done individually or as a group or class. Aimed at stimulating free-thinking and creativity, no specific theme has been introduced this year, and children are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild.

The competition, launched seven years ago to emphasise the importance of reading and writing as critical life-skills for children, attracted more than 1 500 entries last year. In each of the two age categories – 6-9 years and 10-13 years, the winning entrant will receive R5 000 in cash, and the same amount to buy books for his/her class. In addition, the two winners’ books will be published in both English and Afrikaans, by Jacklin Enterprises, and sold through Exclusive Books stores countrywide. Second and third prizes are worth R2 000 and R1 000 for the child and an equivalent amount’s worth of books respectively.

Entries for this year’s K-TV Write Stuff competition close on December 10, with finalists and winners being announced in February 2000. A mailer will be posted to hundreds of primary schools throughout Africa and the competition will also be publicised on K-TV. Entry forms can be found in the October issue of the TV Magazine. Details from Kerryn Pavkovich or Marina Smithers on (011) 784-1008 or Fax (011) 784-1009.
