INSIDE APARTHEID'S PRISON (article first published : 2001-12-2)

Inside Apartheid's Prison by Raymond Suttner was recently released by Adams & Co. (Musgrave) and University of Natal Press.

Born in Durban, Raymond Suttner studied mainly at the University of Cape Town before holding teaching and research posts in law and African studies at various universities including University of Natal Durban. He has published widely in scholarly journals and co-wrote Thirty Years of the Freedom Charter (Ravan Press '86) with Jeremy Cronin.

Raymond Suttner has been involved in politics since his student days. From the early 1970s he was involved in underground activities for the ANC and SACP and this led to his arrest and imprisonment on two occasions. In between his two periods of imprisonment which totalled ten years Suttner was very active in the UDF.

After the unbanning of the ANC and SACP, he became head of Political Education in the ANC and for three years was South Africa's ambassador to Sweden. He is now a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Policy Studies in Johannesburg. He is researching a project on the culture(s) of the ANC.

Inside Apartheid's Prison tells Raymond Suttner's extraordinary story through his letters from prison . Written in a clear and very human style devoid of assumed knowledge, he presents a unique view of imprisonment under the apartheid regime. With a mix of factual description and feeling and emotion, he evokes the differences in the human spirit, both of revolutionaries, and their oppressors without ever falling into a rhetorical stance or blanket condemnation.
