INVITATION TO WRITERS (article first published : 2001-11-12)

Short stories will be considered for the 2002 Sanlam Literary Award. Sponsored by Sanlam and administered by the Grahamstown Foundation, the award offers prizes totalling R11,000.

In the published category R6,000 will be awarded for the best original short story published, or accepted for publication, since the beginning of 2000. An entry in this category may have been published either in a collection of short stories by an individual, in a collection which includes works by other authors, or in a commercial magazine. The winner in the unpublished category will receive R5,000 for the best unpublished story.

Stories must be original and in English (translations are not acceptable). Authors must be South African citizens, or permanently resident in South Africa.

As part of the award, each winner will receive a return air ticket from anywhere in South Africa to Port Elizabeth and transport forward to Grahamstown plus one night’s accommodation to attend the award presentation which will take place during the National Arts Festival (June 29 to July 6).

Each entry must be accompanied by a separate official completed entry form and must reach the organisers before March 31 2002.
