FATIMA MEER’S PRISON DIARY (article first published : 2001-08-18)

The Institute for Black Research , Kwela Books , and Adams Campus Bookshop recently launched the publication Fatima Meer : Prison Diary 113 Days (Kwela Books , Aug 2001).

The foreword by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela reads: “In mid-1976 following the pupil's revolt in Soweto, eleven women – largely members of the newly formed Federation of Black Women, were detained under Section 6 of the Terrorism Act and placed in solitary confinement When that legislation was revised as Section 29 of the Internal Security Act, we were removed from solitary confinement and allowed to be together, to have newspapers and to receive visitors twice a week.”

Among those detained were Jeanie Noel , Sibongile Kubeka , Sally Motlana , Cecily Palmer , Joyce Seroke , Vesta Smith , Jane Phakati , Debora Mashoba , Fatima Meer , Lorraine Tabane and Winnie Mandela.
