OLYMPIAD WINNERS (article first published : 1999-08-1)

Nicola Bidenís entry for the national English Olympiad carried her to victory in first place over 4,000 other pupils from around South Africa. Aged 17, this Durban Girlsí College student who intends to train for a bachelor of arts degree and eventually become an actress, wins a literary tour of the United Kingdom as well as the one-year scholarship to Rhodes University offered to the first 50 students.

The teaching of English literature must be good at DGC because Nicolaís fellow students, Sarah Mulholland (16) and Megan Butler (17), came in fourth and sixth respectively. The top 20 winners were honoured at a ceremony held in Grahamstown during the annual Schools Festival. Entrants to the annual De Beerís English Olympiad were required to study crime novels by Agatha Christie and Charles Dickens and write an exam titled Different Approaches to the Crime Novel.

One of the few instances in South Africa today where itís an honour to be associated with crime!
