WORLD BOOK DAY (article first published : 2001-04-5)

UNESCO’s annual World Book Day on April 23, Shakespeare’s birthday, is a festival of reading, a day to celebrate the pleasures of reading, writing, and books. This year’s slogan is South Africa reads.

All around the country in schools and libraries, children and parents will be writing stories, celebrating books, listening to writers read, buying books at book fairs and book sales. There will be storytelling, readings by well-known writers, exhibitions, and street performances. Bookshops everywhere will be offering discounts and special activities to promote the enjoyment of books and reading.

2001 has been declared The Year of the Reader, by the Minister of Education, Kader Asmal, which means that this year’s World Book Day is really a day to celebrate.

Whittakers in the UK has offered £5,000 to encourage booksellers who do development work in their communities. Among the three chosen booksellers is Peter Adams (Adams & Co) in KZN. The others are Simon Mateboge in Rustenberg and Berens in Montagu. These bookshops will run competitions for book prizes from their shops.
