TIME OF THE WRITER SEMINARS (article first published : 2001-03-21)

The Centre for Creative Arts (University of Natal) in association with the French Institute of South Africa presents The Time of the Writer at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from March 26 to 31. As part of the Centre's commitment to provide a range of activities to stimulate writing in the province, a series of lectures, seminars and workshops have been scheduled during the festival week.

A special seminar-workshop for educators entitled Literature in the classroom will take place at the Documentation Centre in Durban on March 27 from 14h30 to 16h00. This seminar will explore topics such as understanding literature; communicating literature in the classroom; making literature interesting for students; creating a culture of reading and writing. The workshop is jointly co-ordinated by the Centre for Creative Arts (University of Natal) and the KZN Department of Education (North Durban). March 28 March: 12h20-13h30 - Seminar at University of Natal - Pietermaritzburg (UNP) Library Seminar Room; 14h00-16h00 - Workshop for aspirant writers at KwaMuhle Museum, Ordnance Road; 14h00-15h30 - Seminar at UNP French Dept.

March 29: 11h40-16h00 - Seminar-workshop at University of Durban-Westville (UDW) (Senate Chamber); 14h30-16h00 - Seminar at UND Afrikaans Dept. (MTB A325); 14h30-16h00 - Writers visit to Thuthukani Harm Reduction Centre; 16h45-18h30 - Alliance Française literary evening.

March 31: 10h00-12h00 - Public readings and discussions at NSA Gallery, Bulwer Road.

A series of writers workshops in the rural centres of Ulundi, Empangeni and Ladysmith organised in conjunction with the KZN education and Culture Directorate has already been completed.

The Time of the Writer festival runs from March 26 to 31 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Participating writers are J Bernlef (Netherlands), Mongo Beti (Cameroun), Mia Cuoto (Mozambique), Amma Darko (Ghana), E K M Dido (South Africa), Ronnie Govender (South Africa), Alexander Kanengoni (Zimbabwe), Dany Laferièrre (Haiti), Christine Lincoln (USA), Mandla Langa (South Africa), Arthur Maimane (South Africa), Ernest Pépin (Guadeloupe), Michèle Rakotoson (Madagascar), Hansjörg Schertenleib (Switzerland), Zoë Wicomb (South Africa).
