UNDER THE FRANGIPANI (article first published : 2001-03-21)

David Philip Publishers and Adams Campus Bookshop will launch the novel Under the Frangipani by Mia Couto during the Time Of The Writer Festival on March 27.

Mia Couto was born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1955. In the years after the independence of his country in 1975, he was the director of the Mozambican Information Agency and editor of the magazine Tempo and the Maputo newspaper Noticias. He lives in Mozambique and works as an environmental biologist.

His first collection of poetry, Raiz de Orvalho (Root of Dew) was published in 1983. In 1986, his first book of short stories Vozes Anoitecidas received wide critical acclaim in Portugal. Since then he has published four further collections of short stories and two novels, Terra Sonambula (1992) and A Varanda do Frangipani (1996).

His work has been translated into other European languages, and some of his stories have been adapted for the stage in Mozambique and South Africa. Translations into English of his work include two collections of short stories, Voices Made Night (Heinemann, 1990) and Every Man is a Race (Heinemann, 1993). Translated by David Brookshaw, Under the Frangipani is his first novel to be published in English.

Under the Frangipani is 150 pages and retails at R84.95.
