2001 SANLAM LITERARY AWARD (article first published : 2001-02-17)

Novels by South African authors will be considered for the 2001 Sanlam Literary Award. Sponsored by Sanlam and administered by the Grahamstown Foundation, the award offers prizes totalling R13 000.

In the published category R8,000 will be awarded for the best original novel which has been published, or accepted for publication, since the beginning of 1999. The winner in the unpublished category will be awarded R5,000 for the best unpublished novel. An author may submit novels in each of the two categories. The novels must be in English (translations from other languages are not considered original). Three adjudicators appointed by the Grahamstown Foundation will judge the competition.

The winners will attend the presentation ceremony as guests of the sponsors, during the Standard Bank National Arts Festival (June 28 to July 7) in Grahamstown. Previous winners include Pamela Jooste, Tom Rymour, Njabulo Ndebele, Zakes Mda, EM Macphail, Menan du Plessis, John Conyngham and Peter Wilhelm.
