THE SEARCH FOR UNDERSTANDING (article first published : 2000-11-8)

Next week, Adams Campus Bookshop launches Science & Theology since Copernicus: the search for understanding, a new book by Peter Barrett (Physics, UND), published by Unisa Press.

This book is the story of the debate between the natural sciences and Christian belief. It deals briefly with three major shifts in the Western understanding of the world since the mid-16th century, and their significance for the world-view and doctrine of the Christian Church. These shifts are associated with the Scientific Revolution of the 16/17th centuries, Darwin's Theory of Evolution presented in the 19th century and the New Physics of the 20th century. Each has had profound implications for theology as it seeks to provide a coherent account of the creation, nature and meaning of the universe.

"This book promises to be a valuable and important addition to the growing body of literature on theology and science today,” says Wentzel van Huyssteen (Theology & Science, Princeton Theological Seminary, USA). “Not only are the contents well-organized and intelligently planned, but both the historical overviews and discussions of contemporary issues offer in-depth arguments and crystal clear information. The author discusses philosophical and theological matters with integrity and nuance, ending with a proposal for a particular Christian perspective that comes across as highly plausible and challenging."

Niels Henrik Gregersen (Systematic Theology, U Aarhus, Denmark) describes the book as a "concise and up to date introduction to the long-lasting dialogue between science and theology. Balanced in its presentations and sensitive to the cultural conditions of the present-day discussion, this book helps us to understand how the attraction of 'beauty on every scale' can play a unifying role in the wide-ranging search for wisdom and knowledge."

Peter Barrett co-organizes the annual conferences of the SA Science & Religion Forum (Unisa), and was a recipient of a Templeton Foundation award for a course in Science & Religion for history majors.
