GANDHI SALT MARCH (article first published : 2008-04-14)

On April 20, the Tibet Society of South Africa will join the Gandhi Salt March to show their respects to Gandhi-ji, and to create an awareness regarding the Chinese occupation of Tibet, especially in the light of the Olympic Games and the current violence that has erupted. The walk will be a peaceful demonstration of support to all Tibetans and a non-violent appeal to the Chinese Government to engage in dialogue with the Tibetan Government in Exile.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama & Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche (PM of the Tibetan-Government-in-Exile) both have a great respect for the Gandhian philosophy and personally live by some of the values and ideals that Gandhi-ji expressed.

The Tibet Society of SA will join the marchers as they leave the Gandhi Settlement in Phoenix at 07h00 and walk with them to the Army Base camp at the beach-front. The walk is approximately 22 kms and walkers usually arrive at a tented area at 12h00. A cultural programme and lunch follows and usually the day ends at about 14h00.

You need not walk the complete distance and can be picked up or dropped off along the way if you cannot join the march for the full duration. More information from Chris Kudla on 083 654 8182 or visit www.tibet.org.za
