31 MILLION REASONS (article first published : 2007-11-14)

Former radio personality Naresh Veeran has launched his debut crime-thriller, 31 Million Reasons.

After his departure from the SABC as Head of Lotus FM in 2003, Naresh freelanced his services as an advertising and media management specialist. He has since worked with a number and variety of leading brands throughout South Africa.

Set in Durban against the backdrop of actual events around one of the largest cash heists in South Africa’s history, The story itself is a finely crafted account of the events and plans building up to the robbery, the aftermath and the police officers who were involved in masterminding the heist.

“While it is ultimately a fictional account of what transpired during and after the robbery,” says Naresh Veeran, “to date, a number of issues remain unresolved. These include the actual amount of the cash involved as 31 million was simply the amount the facility was insured against. Many believe that substantially more was taken as the money itself was never found.”

In 31 Million Reasons, a maverick detective unravels the fabric and explores each thread which takes him on a rollercoaster ride from the townships of Durban to the grimy backstreets of Cape Town. The themes of greed, temptation, love and duty as they affect the lives of everyday people are explored in the process.

His immediate plans are to complete the marketing around 31 Million Reasons in South Africa before launching the novel internationally. “The publishing company is also keen on me exploring synergies with other media,” he says, “but I have enough on my plate to keep me busy until then.” 31 Million Reasons is also the subject of a screenplay which will be developed in 2008. A trailer based on scenes from the novel was shot by Bright Side Pictures earlier this year and is available on the book’s website at 31millionreasons.com as well as on facebook.com and youtube.com

31 Million Reasons is available on paperback in bookstores throughout KwaZulu-Natal.
