GCINA MHLOPHE LECTURE (article first published : 2007-11-8)

South African activist, actor, storyteller, poet, playwright, director and author Gcina Mhlophe will present a retrospective lecture at the Albert Luthuli Museum in Groutville on November 15 as part of the KwaDukuza Coast’s third annual Umdwebo festival.

This highly successful and immensely popular lifestyle festival takes place in and around Ballito from November 9 to 17. The festival offers a fantastic range of visual art, lecture-demonstrations, food and liquor tastings, live theatre and music at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, the ‘legendary’ ladies lunch and the Umdwebo’s signature event, the barefoot gala dinner-dance on the beach.

Gcina Mhlophe gives the Luthuli retrospective lecture marking the 40th anniversary of Chief Luthuli’s death. She has been invited to conduct this lecture as she was friends with Chief Luthuli and his wife Nokukhanya. She also wrote poems and recorded songs about them and performed a play for them as well as writing the introduction to the biography on Nokukhanya.

Gcina Mhlophe does her most important work through charismatic performances, aiming to preserve storytelling as a means of keeping history alive and encouraging South African children to read. She tells her stories in four of South Africa's languages: English, Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa. Her stories meld folklore, information, current affairs, song and idiom.

The lecture starts at 11h00 on November 15. Tickets are limited due to space restrictions and booking is essential. Festival queries to Henk Swanepoel on 082 444 1825, e-mail info@umdwebo.co.za or visit www.umdwebo.co.za
