LIVE AT THE ZULU JAZZ LOUNGE (article first published : 2007-04-3)

The Zulu Jazz Lounge at The Playhouse on Durban's Smith Street goes from strength to strength as a dynamic venue that hosts quality jazz gigs for enthusiasts from Thursdays to Saturdays, starting at 21h00. Now ZJL is extending its options for patrons by opening the venue on Wednesday evenings through April, to introduce its newly conceived Izwe poetry performance series.

This brave initiative features locally based artists who take up the tradition of storytelling. These fresh South African voices can be heard sharing their own individual thoughts and feelings, fusing the rhythms of poetry against their own musical backdrop.

The poetry will be followed by some local bands, who are set to take entertain patrons while gaining some valuable experience on the ZJL stage. The Wednesday shows will begin at 19h30. A R20 cover charge goes towards transporting the performers to the venue and home.

Thursday evenings are red letter nights for jazz lovers who flock to the Zulu Jazz Lounge to get in on the act each week. Upcoming dates to diarize for April include local favourites Jika, featuring Bongani Nkwanyana (April 5), Paul Kock and Friends (April 12), Darius Brubeck on (April 19) and Lex Futshane (April 26).

The Zulu Jazz Lounge has fast become one of Durban's most starry jazz venues. Gigs starts at 21h00 and for a cover charge of just R20 you can savour the best in local and international jazz at this world class facility, which provides a platform for the most promising of our regional, up and coming talent along with stellar names.

The adjacent Albany Parkade offers 24 hour security on site, and ZJL doormen will gladly escort you back to your vehicle. Simply take a ticket, drive up the ramp and turn left, then proceed down to park on the ground floors. Present your ticket upon entry at the Zulu Jazz Lounge for validation.

Please note ZJL is also open on Wednesdays, but is presently not open on Sundays. For more information call 031 304 2377, e-mail info@zulujazzlounge.co.za
