LOTUS FM COMPETITION (article first published : 2007-02-5)

The SABC has launched a campaign for all stations, running from now until end March in a bid to allow listeners to share their ideas and values as well as expose their talent.

On Lotus FM, competitions will be held across two genres: poetry and short stories. The focus will be on poetry for February and short stories for March. Send in your original, unpublished work as soon as possible. The theme is South Africa, My Pride and there is no length limit.

Entries should be sent to Lotus FM Express Yourself Competition, Private Bag 1337, Durban, 4000. Or e-mail raeesa@lotusfm.co.za. Closing date for poems is February 9.

A panel of independent judges will choose three of the best poem or short story per week and these will be recorded for broadcast in the Lotus studios. Listeners will be asked to vote for a weekly winner via sms. At the end of the month, the listeners vote for an overall monthly winner in each category.

The same format will be run in March for the short story competition. There is no theme for the short stories. At the end of March there will be an event to hand over prizes for the winners as well as the listeners who vote the winners. Prizes are very generous. For the poetry writers, the weekly winner receives R2,000 with the overall winner being awarded R5,000. For short stories writers these are R5,000 for the weekly winner and R10,000 for the overall winner.

The prizes for listeners are R1,000 for the weekly poetry winner and R2,000 for the overall winner. In the short story category, the prize is R3,000 for the weekly winner and R5,000 for the overall winner.
