CLASSICFEEL EMBRACES SA HERITAGE (article first published : 2008-08-31)

CLASSICFEEL magazine offers its readers its annual heritage issue, in celebration of all that makes us uniquely South African – past and present – during Heritage Month in September.

CLASSICFEEL magazine, South Africa’s prime showcase of music, arts, culture and lifestyle, is the ideal vehicle through which to celebrate Heritage Month. The September ’08 issue features the tireless work of the Palaeoanthropological Scientific Trust, known as PAST, in the Cradle of Humankind. This issue also looks at the fascinating efforts of heritage conservationists as Timbuktu Script & Scholarship, an exhibition of manuscripts from the holdings of the Ahmed Baba Institute (IHERI-AB) in Timbuktu, Mali, as it tours the country.

CLASSICFEEL then takes readers on a tour through the Brenthurst Library in Johannesburg to explore the role the Oppenheimer family has played in preserving the unique history of southern Africa. And art curator Natalie Knight tells us more about an ‘evolving tradition’.

“But this issue is not just about ‘fossils and manuscripts,” as publisher and editor-in-chief Lore Watterson says. Johan Botha, the star tenor of the Cape Town Opera’s benefit performance of Aida and our Heldentenor, graces the magazine’s cover. Extraordinary pianist Gabriela Montero speaks to CLASSICFEEL and Maestro Sir John Eliot Gardiner talks about his pilgrimage with Bach.

For the magazine’s jazz fundis, Natascha Roth and Sydney Mnisi tell all about their new projects, while Kgafela oa Magogodi explores the legacy of Steve Biko. Recognising that the heritage that South Africa’s children will embrace is the work of contemporary artists and musicians, CLASSICFEEL engages with a few of the prestigious art awards that have taken place in recent months.

The September issue’s lifestyle section brings readers the best in food, wine and visual art features, as well as movie, CD and DVD reviews, and some exciting giveaways. And so CLASSICFEEL magazine celebrates our heritage with the best in music, arts, culture and lifestyle, as it does each and every month.

KZN now has a strong presence in CLASSICFEEL with a regular column from Caroline Smart, editor of artSMart
