JOZI SPOKEN WORD FEST 2008 (article first published : 2008-08-12)

Botsotso Publishing, the Goethe-Institut, Exclusive Books, Sounds of Edutainment and the Wits Writing Centre present the much-anticipated Jozi Spoken WordFest 2008 from August 13 to 16 2008 at Wits Theatre and Writing Centre on the main campus of Wits University in Braamfontein. The programme consists of live performances, interactive public participation through workshops, symposia, spoken word films, slam jam poetry, a mentorship and protégé programme, a photography and manuscript exhibition and book launches.

Initiated in 2007 as an annual arts event, it showcases contemporary South African and international artists involved in the performance of poetry, fiction and dramatic monologue, including storytelling and comedy. More than 60 writers, emerging and established, will participate in the second edition of the Jozi Spoken Word Festival before a primary target audience of students.

Free workshops: Transporting literary forms across languages and Self-publishing or getting published and ART WORD - will take place at the Wits Writing Centre on August 13 and 14 from 15h00 to 17h00. Symposia: (free of charge) include Traditional literary forms and their contemporary adaptation and The line between fiction and faction at the Wits Amphitheatre for the first two days from 17h30 to 18h30.

Performances and readings form the highlight of the festival and will follow the symposia in the Amphitheatre at 19h00 once the programme of the day is finished. Tickets R30 (R20 students)

Zorro from KwaZulu/Natal will be among the line-up of performers on August 13 along with Papi, Dread X (Botswana), Tlou Setumu (Limpopo), Oscar Benjamin (Zimbabwe), Rebirth Konnexion, Interval, Dr CVRKK Molefi(Botswana), Blak Dot, Fikile Zwane, Zama Batyi and Masoja Msiza.

The Women's Month Special Show takes place on August 14 from 19h00 also at the Amphitheatre and features female writers, praise poets, singers and theatre practitioners.

Mphutlane wa Bofelo and Mpumi Magwaza, both from KwaZulu-Natal, will be among the main performers on August 15 at 19h00. The line-up includes Prince Shapiro, Gift,), Mmakgari Dabutha, Damon Berry, Botsotso Jesters, NKQO (Eastern Cape), Mak Manaka, Richard Fox, Afurakan.

Other attractions include a Mentorship and Protégé programme, Spoken Word Films (free of charge, screened in the Amphitheatre); The United States of Poetry (1995); I Mike What I Like (2006) a film screening the performance of Kgafela oa Magogodi, Touch of Sound: A Sound Journey with Evelyn Glennie; This Poem and a book launch featuring View from an Escalator by Liesl Jobson and Botsotso 15 which includes material performed or presented the Jozi Spoken Wordfest 2007.

A Manuscript exhibition curated by Anna Varney will be introduced at the festival through an installation by Lionel Murcott. Photography and Poetry Exhibition, IsisX, curated by Botsotso Publishers, combines photographs with the poems of 12 women

Slam Poetry Jam takes place on August 16, a competition in which the audience acts as judge.

Tickets for poetry performances are very reasonably priced at R30 (R20 students, pensioners and block bookings of ten and more). Light meals and a full cash bar can be enjoyed in Café Dulce in the Wits Theatre Foyer. Free, covered parking in the adjacent Senate House (the entrance is on Jorissen Street) or anywhere free on campus ensures peace of mind.
