ST MARY’S CELEBRATION (article first published : 2001-06-10)

St Mary’s Hall, 12 Windermere Road, was constructed in 1901 as a School/Chapel to St Cyprian’s Church for £1,655 and was the original St Mary’s Church.

The building was damaged by a storm in 1905, and in 1908 the then members of St Mary’s decided to use the building for church services only. The congregation grew to the extent that the building was too small and the present Church building next to the Hall was built in 1912 for £2,962 Pounds, which included the architect’s fees. The building reverted to a church hall for community and social functions.

A “listed building” (i.e. of historical and architectural significance), it is described in the listing as “a Victorian Church (now a church hall) with porch and side pavilions; originally in polychromous Free Style but now plastered and painted; some notable details including cast iron, palisade fencing; townscape and historic.”

The Revd Rogers Govender was followed by the Revd John Roberts who, together with the people of St Mary’s, have brought St Mary’s to where it is today, a parish that is open to all people.

This Hall has served many people in various ways over these ninety-nine years. We would like the public at large to help us celebrate this historic building by sharing with us some of the stories that you may have or recall about the use of the Hall. We want to compile a Centenary brochure/booklet or pamphlet with the stories that will be sent to us.

Send your information to St Mary’s Hall Centenary, 105 Eleventh Avenue, Morningside, 4001. Phone 309-5040 Fax: (031) 303-7854 or e-mail: Prinia@iafrica.com
