BBC PRIME FOR JUNE (article first published : 2007-06-11)

There are new shows for all tastes on BBC Prime on DStv during June.

Presenting New Drama on Monday nights with The Chase; in this eight-part series the drama unfolds in an English country veterinary practice. George, the head vet is retiring and wants to leave the practice to his two daughters. Both vets but with very different goals in life, Anna and Sarah come together to decide both their futures and the future of the business. This family drama twists and turns as old family secrets threaten to re-surface and shatter lives and hearts.

New Inspector Lynley Mysteries on Wednesdays and Thursday feature in the Crime Drama Doubles. Lynley and Havers are again together to investigate crime. They are a compelling duo whose relationship, though professional, always threatens to spill over into their private lives, which adds tension and an altogether different dimension to the drama.

New Tuesday night comedy continues with the return of Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge), as an ex-rock 'n' roll roadie, Tom Saxondale. Coogan again pulls off a comic masterpiece in this series which follows Saxondale years after the fame of the music business has faded. He now works in pest control in Herefordshire, divorced but having finally found the love of his life in the form of T-shirt shop manager, Magz. Very funny and very clever this is great new Prime comedy in the tradition of the sharply observed but slightly off-the-wall characters that Coogan always manages to create.

Also new to Tuesday nights is The Mighty Boosh, which follows the surreal antics of Howard and Vince who work in a run-down zoo that has very few animals; so few, in fact, that they have to dress up and occupy the cages themselves. Weird but also wonderful this is ground-breaking new cult comedy that you won't want to miss!

Sunday Night Docs presents a new 6-part series, Blizzard – Race to the Pole, which retraces Scott’s attempt to reach the South Pole ahead of Amundsen. It’s an exciting look at the true story of his ill-fated attempt and a series that challenges history with some surprising results!

Weekday Entertainment continues with new Weakest Link. And new to weekday lifestyle is the brand new series of What Not To Wear which sees new presenters Mica Paris and Lisa Butcher transforming wardrobes and in the process transforming lives. Weekends on Daytime continue with… something for the boys and something for the girls including shows such as I’ll Show Them Whose Boss and Great Romances Of The 20th Century.

Some favourite programmes return for the little ones on CBeebies….Smarteenies comes back with a bang! Featuring Doogy the dog this series will inspire youngsters to be creative and artistic. In Bits & Bobs, Fluff and Stuff continue travelling in their machine called Trug having adventures and teaching through fun as they go along.

Have fun with the Tweenies - songs and games all wrapped up with a new character called Izzles! And put dancing shoes on and make some noise for Boogie Beebies which continues this month! And last but not least join Roly Mo for loads of fun, reading, games and activities in The Roly Mo Show.
