AFRICAMAGIC (article first published : 2007-04-3)

DStv is passionate about providing subscribers with the best television channels available. When the first plans were unveiled by M-Net to create and launch an African general entertainment channel in December 2003, few could have predicted the widespread popularity the channel would achieve on the African continent in little under four years.

The overwhelming positive response to the channel and the demand for more of its home-grown content, made for Africans by Africans, has resulted in another evolution for AfricaMagic – this time into a fully fledged 24 hour channel, as DStv delivers an all-day channel to subscribers.

Having begun life as a 7 hour channel and then morphed into a 16 hour channel, AfricaMagic has now come full circle with a 24 hour line-up.

Hamida Suliman, Head of the AfricaMagic Channel couldn’t be happier with the news: “This channel truly has a life of its own,” she says. “When we began the idea was to provide a home for African content, a place where TV viewers could find African entertainment. Today I can confidently say that our audiences have forged into a community that shares African stars, stories and identity. So to our contributors, we say thank you for your commitment.

“From the start, these contributors and their vision allowed us to package a truly unique offering which has let our audiences consume programming that focuses on African culture,” she goes on to say. “To our audiences, and to all those who have helped us, thank you for your support and encouragement. We trust that we will continue to enjoy a place in your affections.”

Her sentiments are echoed by M-Net Director for sub-Saharan Africa, Joseph Hundah who says: “AfricaMagic is by its very nature a channel built for Africans. What is fantastic now is that Africans are building the channel, too – by supporting it, by providing content for it, by embracing it. We are confident that by offering this channel 24 hours daily we will add even greater value to the experience of our DStv audiences, who are so responsible for the channel’s popularity.”

As the channel begins its 24-hour screening from April 1, fans can have no doubt that it will continue to show blockbuster, award-winning movies. Kicking off the highlights in April is the AMAA awarded film Osuofia In London on April 1. On April 6, viewers can tune in for the drama In My Country while on April 13, switch on for Drum-Stories from Sophiatown and on April 20, AfricaMagic screens the Don Cheadle war-drama Hotel Rwanda.

From April, look out for the new daily breakfast show Africa Awakes, season 3 of Treasures (Tuesdays), Rough Edges (Thursdays), Next Movie Star Reality Show (Sundays), Niger Delta Peace Initiative reality show (Wednesdays), season 2 of the OGE With Iretola Fashion Show (Saturdays) and the Miss Malaika Ghana 2006 Reality Show (Mondays to Fridays). Audiences can also watch season 2 of Shallow Waters and House A Part.

In May, AfricaMagic is also going to screen the 2007 AMAA Awards - so tune-in to DStv channel 102 to see all the Nollywood stars come out to collect awards and celebrate the year’s film achievements!
