GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS (article first published : 2007-01-10)

Leonardo DiCaprio has received two nominations as best actor in a drama for the 64th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony, to be held in the US in January - for his performance, with a South African accent, in The Blood Diamond and also for his role in The Departed.

The Golden Globes have traditionally always been a good indicator of what will be in favour for the Oscars, to be presented late in February.

Others nominated for a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama are Peter O'Toole for Venus, Will Smith for The Pursuit of Happyness and Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.

Three of the five nominees for best actress in a drama are British - Judi Dench for Notes on a Scandal, Helen Mirren for The Queen and Kate Winslet for Little Children. Other nominees in this category are Penélope Cruz for Volver and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Sherry Baby.

Films nominated for the best drama of the year are Babel, Bobby, The Departed, Little Children and The Queen, while those nominated for best musical or comedy are Borat, The Devil Wears Prada, Dreamgirls, Little Miss Sunshine and Thank You For Smoking.

Contenders for a Golden Globe or best performance by an actor in a musical or comedy are Sacha Baron Cohen for Borat, Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Aaron Eckhart for Thank You for Smoking, Chiwetel Ejiofor for Kinky Boots and Will Ferrell for Stranger Than Fiction.

Those nominated for the award for best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy are Annette Bening for Running with Scissors, Toni Collette for Little Miss Sunshine, Beyoncé Knowles for Dreamgirls, Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada and Renée Zellweger for Miss Potter.

Nominees for best actor in a supporting role are Ben Affleck for Hollywoodland, Eddie Murphy for Dreamgirls,Jack Nicholson for The Departed, Brad Pitt for Babel and Mark Wahlberg for The Departed.

Contenders for the award for best actress in a supporting role are Adriana Barraza for Babel, Cate Blanchett for Notes on a Scandal, Emily Blunt for The Devil Wears Prada, Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls and Rinko Kikuchi for Babel.

Clint Eastwood has earned two Best Director nominations, for Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. He is up against Stephen Frears for The Queen, Alejandro González Iñárritu for Babel and Martin Scorsese for The Departed.

Movies nominated for best animated film are Cars, Happy Feet and Monster House. – Billy Suter
