SHIELD (article first published : 2006-09-18)

Exclusive to actionX (Channel 6 on DStv), Shield is a popular and critically acclaimed series that plays out in the tough, morally ambiguous world of an inner-city Los Angeles police precinct in which the line between good and evil is crossed every day.

Michael Chiklis (Detective Vic Mackey) has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of Mackey, leader of the elite Strike Team, an effective but corrupt cop who operates under his own set of rules. Mackey is known as a rouge cop who is not above breaking the rules to keep the streets safe and his self-interest intact. The young precinct head, Capt. David Aceveda (Benito Martinez), doesn’t like Mackey’s tactics and wants him off the force, but veteran Det. Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder) understands Mackey and knows how to play both sides of the fence.

The Strike Team was based on the real-life Los Angeles Police Department Rampart Division’s corrupt anti-gang unit.

The show received outstanding praise for taking risks. Shield has been nominated for Emmy’s for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing in the Drama Series category. The show won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series. Michael Chiklis has been nominated for his work time and time again, winning an Emmy for his role as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, as well as the Television Critics Award for Individual Achievement in Drama.

Shield starts on September 18 with screenings on Mondays at 20h00 (repeated on Sundays at 19h00)
